Laryngeal Cancer
Laryngeal Cancer is usually Squamous Cell cancer by type. It occurs in the tissues of the larynx (voice box). The voice box has 3 areas – the supraglottis (above the vocal cords), the glottis (the vocal cords) and the subglottis (below the vocal cords).
Symptoms
The commonest symptoms are of voice change, sometimes associated with pain and /or earache. Sometimes, depending on the location of cancer there will be difficulty or pain with swallowing. Some patients with a laryngeal cancer also have a neck lump where cancer has spread to nearby lymph glands.
Treatments
Most very early and small tumours may have different options for treatment including minimally invasive surgery (Transoral Laser Surgery) or Radiotherapy.
Medium-sized tumours that are too big to remove without destroying the function of the larynx are usually treated with radiotherapy or radiotherapy and chemotherapy (chemoradiotherapy).
Larger tumours that have already destroyed the cartilage or bone of the larynx or burst out of the larynx require more aggressive treatment. This is usually in the form of a Laryngectomy.
Most tumours are treated with the aim of curing the patient.
