Microlaryngoscopy

A microlaryngoscopy procedure is a procedure under general anaesthetic. The aim is to examine the larynx (voice box) very carefully to look for abnormalities. At the same time biopsies or procedures can be performed which may help the voice or airway.

The procedure involves using specialised instruments in the mouth to open the mouth and allow a direct view of the voice box. Usually, a gum shield is used to protect the teeth and gums. A microscope and/or endoscope is then used to give a magnified view of the voice box and very delicate surgeries can then be performed. Occasionally a laser is used to take samples or make cuts or remove tissue.
