Oesphagoscopy

A rigid oeasophagoscopy procedure is a procedure under general anaesthetic. The aim is to examine the oesophagus (swallowing tube or gullet) very carefully to look for abnormalities. At the same time biopsies or procedures can be performed which may help swallowing. This differs from and OGD (usually performed by a gastroenterologist in that the stomach and often the lower part of the oesophagus is not seen)

The procedure involves using specialised instruments in the mouth to open the mouth and allow a direct view of the oesophagus. Usually, a gum shield is used to protect the teeth and gums. A microscope and/or endoscope is then used to give a magnified view of the oesophagus and very delicate surgeries can then be performed. Occasionally a laser is used to take samples or make cuts or remove tissue. Occasionally a bougie or a balloon may be used to stretch and strictures or blockages.
